Roughing gouges are used to take down the rough square wood into a cylinder and for general shaping of the wood. These thick, heavy forged tools have a great heft that helps stabilize the cut for smooth action - appreciated especially when the work isn't round and the cut is intermediate. The deep "U" shape of the tool helps it shear the wood when cutting and not splintering out.

Except where noted all tools are made of high speed steel (HSS) and are sold handled. Tony Iles hand finishes each and every turning tool himself and is proud that every tool is shipped with its surfaces ground and edges broken. These are tools that will feel wonderful in the hand, with a heft makes them feel very solid - a real aid in turning. All the tools are shipped sharp and ready to use, although we fully expect many of you to customize the grinds to your particular working methods.

Customer Reviews:
1” roughing gouge-handle cracked
By: Gregory L. (Jan, 2022)
I'm new to turning and bought the 1"; roughing gouge as my only RG. While I like the tool shape and heft, after 3 months of intermittent turning, a crack developed behind the ferrule. I had no big catches and use a safety driver (so wood stops spinning with catch). I used the tool to round up split wood (ash and oak). Looking close at the handle, the grain appears not quite straight. Also the swelling behind the ferrule is very small compared to other brands. From the pictures, the larger gouge has larger swelling as well. Perhaps handle shape needs to be beefed up. Annoyed that the handle needs to be replaced so quickly, but like the size of gouge.
I own this product.
