Skew chisels are used in turning to slice a clean shaving from the work. They are also used for cutting beads, working to a sharp edge, and a host of other features. These square section skew chisels are a foundation of all turning and just about the first tool you will need when you start to turn.

Except where noted all tools are made of high speed steel (HSS) and are sold handled. Tony Iles hand finishes each and every turning tool himself and is proud that every tool is shipped with its surfaces ground and edges broken. These are tools that will feel wonderful in the hand, with a heft makes them feel very solid - a real aid in turning. All the tools are shipped sharp and ready to use, although we fully expect many of you to customize the grinds to your particular working methods.

Excellent

I loved my Ashley Illes carving tools, so I purchased the 1.25" skew for Xmas. It appears to be a fine piece of steel (HSS) set in a beech handle with a solid brass pipe ferrel and it holds a keen edge well. I ground a belly in the edge ala Alan Lacer, as the skew is pretty much the only tool I use on a spindle and the belly gives the edge versatility. The easing of all four edges is a nice touch and promotes easy movement across the rest. One small quibble is I wish the handle was 1.5" longer, but the tool is remarkably balanced and hefty, nonetheless. For this quite reasonable price I couldn't be happier with my purchase.
I own this product.
