by Jim Tolpin and George Walker

It’s an essential part of instruction in any realm of the arts: close study of masterpieces. But what exactly should the student focus on?

In “Good Eye,” the fifth book in Jim Tolpin and Geo. R. Walker’s books of practical design principles, the authors walk the reader through a deep analysis of iconic pieces of furniture to show the systems that underlie each design (irrespective of its time period). As they note, “We’ll be looking at most of these masterworks through the filter of a design process. The process itself breaks a design down into the essential parts and how they fit together from the big broad brush strokes to the tiniest details.”

“Good Eye” follows “By Hand & Eye,” “By Hound & Eye,” “From Truths to Tools” and “Euclid’s Door” in exploring “artisan geometry” - the structure that undergirds the forms and proportions of beautiful furniture (and other works of outstanding craft and art) regardless of its era or style. But you need not have read any of the previous books in this series - or any books on furniture design, for that matter - to jump right in with “Good Eye.”

Ultimately the goal is to help you understand what makes these masterworks so good - and to show you how you can use the same forms and proportions to create your own designs.

Hardcover, 8.5" x 11". The concepts are illustrated with hundreds of line drawings. Like all LAP books, Good Eye is meant to last. The interior is printed in black and white #60 natural paper that has been gathered into signatures, sewn together for durability then backed with fiber tape. The book block is attached to the hardcover with a heavy paper hinge. All this is wrapped in cloth and stamped with a metal die plus foil to create the cover image.
