Solid Bar Roughing Out Gouges
By: John Kartchner (May, 2019)
I have been using both 3/8" and the 1/2" gouges for over ten years. They hold an edge well and are absolutely unequaled in their versatility as roughing out gouges. You will discover that they not only rough out appropriately sized projects, but that they can be used extensively for very smooth shaping on very hard woods. Sharpen them to your preferred angle, keep them sharp, and you will become very loyal to them. (And you never have to worry about the shaft bending or breaking.

Nice tool but edge not close to ready (1/2" gouge)
By: Jim K. (Dec, 2017)
Nice tool. The edge however was very rough ground at about a 33 degree angle with a very irregular edge, not straight but about as rough as can be. Having said that, about 3 minutes on the grinder got it fixed up right. Don't let this dissuade you at all, just stating this because reality doesn't meet the description above about being shipped sharp and ready to use.

I have used an Ashley iles 5/8 shank roughing gouge for pens with the high schools because they can do the whole pen with one tool that is easy to explain and sharpen.
