Spindle Gouges
The spindle gouge is the mainstay tool of woodturning of chair legs, banisters, etc. - everything that is turned with the grain of the wood running between centers. Spindle gouges are also useful for shallow hollowing, drilling and beading work. They are generally not as rigid and have shallower flutes than do bowl gouges, which gives them good shaving clearance. The fingernail profile of their grind makes them easy to maneuver in tight spaces.
