According to Paul Sellers, birdcage awls (whose name comes from their use in making actual birdcages) can be preferable to round awls because they do not split the wood when reaming a hole “like a round awl inevitably does.”

If this a concern, give this square blade birdcage awl a try. You can quickly mark starter holes or use it for general layout work. Its hardened high carbon tool steel blade will provide years of service in both hard and soft woods. Blade length is 3-1/2" and handle length is 2-1/2". Stained beech handle with a steel ferrule.

Made in the Czech Republic.
