The Stick Chair Journal No 1 is the inaugural edition of what Chris Schwarz intends to be an annual publication celebrating the stick chair, a “magazine/journal/zine…filled with the minutiae I obsess about.” Issue 1 is being printed in a limited press run and will go out of print once supplies are exhausted.

Topics in this issue include an exploration of hexagonal chair parts; the proud history of using sandpaper (rather than planes or other edged tools) in smoothing your chair; the strange case of the murder-weapon chair; the ingenious "fat boy” scribing tool; a frugal guide to cutting tenons, fitting combs and locking in angles; and complete plans and construction information for a stick comb-back chair. The journal is infused with detailed tips, close-up demonstrations of techniques, and a lively spirit of encouragement and camaraderie.

The specific topics of future issues will vary, but will continue the exploration of all aspects of making stick chairs, an expansive genre that also includes Windsor/Forest chairs and ladderback chairs, including useful tools and copies of plans for stick chairs.

Issue No. 1 of The Stick Chair Journal is 88 pages, with a heavy, coated card-stock and a binding is both sewn and glued for longevity. Printed in the USA.
