We are pleased to offer a basic kit of seven carving tools made by Forge de Saint Juery (Auriou) to the specifications designed for a beginner set by Chris Pye. The set consists of:
- # 3 x 8mm (5/16in.)
- #3 x 14mm (1/2in.)
- #6 x 8mm (5/16in.)
- #6 x 14mm (1/2in.)
- #9 x 8mm (5/16in.)
- #9 x 14mm (1/2in.)
- 60 deg. V-tool x 10mm (3/8in.)
This is a basic set designed to give you many carving choices: deep gouges for shaping, medium gouges for modelling, flat gouges for smoothing surfaces, and the ever-useful V tool. With these tools you'll have the means to carve a wide range of subjects.
The tools are made to Chris Pye's specifications. The new gouges have the older, 'allongee' style of blade that splays from the shoulder. They are lighter to use, and the corners are more available for cutting. The handles are also to Chris's design, with an octagonal form for registration in the hand, and a stately brass ferrule.
The tools are made in France.
In addition to the tools in the basic set we also have a set of four additional tools which will extend functionality of the basic set. The four tools are:
- # 2 x 10mm Skew(3/8in.)
- #3 x 20mm (3/4in.)
- #6 x 20mm (3/4in.)
- #9 x 20mm (3/4in.)
The extender set does not come in its own canvas roll but will easily fit in the roll included with the basic set.
We are also offering two sets of 3 tools each. A set of smaller gouges 5mm (7/32") wide in sweeps 3,6 and 9 and a set with larger 26mm (1") gouges also in sweeps 3,6, and 9.
These tools are only available in sets.
The Fishtail Gouge is Chris Pye’s preference. With an exceptionally thin cutting edge and vast clearance advantage over the allongee style, the Fishtail Gouge can achieve the highest detail in lettering and fine sculpting work. This isn’t the style you’d use for pounding on English oak, but for precision detail and articulate sweeps, there is no better alternative than a French-forged fishtail.
The Set of Seven includes:
- #3 x 6mm (1/4in.)
- #5 x 6mm (1/4in.)
- #7 x 6mm (1/4in.)
- #9 x 6mm (1/4in.)
- #3 x 14mm (1/2in.)
- #5 x 14mm (1/2in.)
- #7 x 14mm (1/2in.)
