The Festool lightweight modular router makes trimming edgebanding a pleasure - and maybe equally importantly, it’s alternative to sanding through plywood veneer though carelessness. It’s a nimble choice for trimming laminate and edge banding, as well as routing grooves for inlays.
The MFK 700 is easily maneuverable, but it is also very stable, with a nice wide base with an outboard handle, so you can position the router precisely on the edge and run it around your work with little fear of wobbling or getting an uneven edge. But - and this is the really cool part - Festool makes systems, not just isolated tools, so the core router pops out and also attaches to an included vertical base, so that when you want to run the router parallel to the edge of the work (not the face as usual), you can switch bases and still have a wide, stable base running on the face of the work, with the router running the right way with a really cool ball bearing fence. The vertical fence is canted at 1.5 degrees so that you can safely trim edge-banding requiring NO ADDITIONAL FINISH WORK. You can even get flush trimming around corners. No tools are required for switching bases, which saves oodles of time looking for wrenches. And of course dust collection works both horizontally and vertically. .
MFK 700 EQ Set Includes the router itself, dust extraction hood, 1/4" Collet, 8 mm Collet, Standard threaded base for US guide bushing, Plug-it Power Cord, Vertical Base, 1.5 degree Horizontal Base, and Feeler Bearing Set packed in a Sys3 M 137 Systainer
In the past, Festool offered a version of the MFK called the “MFK 700 EQ/B Plus,” which did not include the 1.5 degree Horizontal Base. This version of the tool set has been discontinued but if you want to buy the 1.5 degree horizontal base as an accessory, it is available as a separate part (#495165)
Many router bits that fit the OF1010, 1400 and 2200 can be used with the MFK, but the primarily used bits are #491666 and #50038, which removes excess edge banding material for flush trimming on flat or beveled pieces. Note: Festool cautions against using a bit with a cutting length over 5/8" (16 mm) and a shank length of 1-13/16" (46 mm) with the horizontal base, and recommends a 3/4" (19 mm) bit diameter is recommended for greatest range of adjustment. Festool recommends use of bits # 491666 for trimming of edge banding with the horizontal base.
