Where is My Iron Ore?

10/28/2007 (Certainly one of my weakest blog entries to date)

Where is My Iron Ore? 4Yet again I find myself on a hunting trip. Somewhere in my apartment I have a large chunk of Magnatite ore - a really high quality iron ore that was mined in New Jersey until the Mesabi Iron Range was discovered and was easier to extract. So high in iron content is this ore that a magnet actually sticks to the rock. This particular chunk I found in Chester, New Jersey at the foot of an abandoned 19th century blast furnace. But I can't find it now. In the picture to the left is a piece of limestone that I found at the same time. You can see on one side of the limestone a glassy deposit of slag. The point of finding the iron was to illustrate a long blog entry on the making of iron. Which will have to wait until I find the iron. I also have a chunk of coal too which I can't find.
The problem with finding things is all the fault of the boy. As he is getting older everything I own that is either heavy or sharp and is not actually nailed down (most of my possessions) is migrating to higher and higher shelves or a deep dark closet.
So I can't find anything at the moment. But as soon as I do - the iron blog (to be followed by a steel blog entry) will see the light of day.

Hey Joel,
I sympathize 100% -- I'm also losing things here due to hastily moving them out
of range of "the boy." I can't wait to build him his own workbench, though.
