W. D. Lockwood Dyes have set the standard for coloring and staining wood since their introduction in 1895. Metal complex dyes have the highest lightfastness (resistance to fading) of all dyes, and are recommended for exterior use, or in areas where strong, direct sunlight is expected. Most metal complex dyes can be dissolved in either water or alcohol. There are a couple of exceptions noted in the dye list that only can be dissolved in water.

The color samples below show the stain in use in two color dilutions on a sample Birch board. The denser color on the left is a more typical 1 ounce of dye in 1 quart of water. The lighter stain on the right of each sample is a weaker 1 ounce of stain in 2 quarts of water. How your stain will ultimately appear on the finished piece depends on several factors: the dilution of the stain, the method by which it was applied, the absorbency of the material, how the top coat looks, etc. Always test your stains and finish before using them on your project. I finished the entire interior of a Don Hill drift boat 4 years ago. The dye used was Honduras Brown Mahogany No. MCW23/50. Woods dyed were Miranti BS1088 plywood, white oak, black locust, and Osage orange. The various woods blended to a fairly uniform color. After four years, I have noticed very little color change.
I own this product.
