Ironing rasps are used to selectively smooth flat surfaces that are surrounded by a raised edge. (The flat part of a carved pie-crust table comes to mind as an example.) The offset handle enables you to smooth a surface far from an edge, and the curve of the rasp makes it easy to rasp flat surfaces. Auriou makes true flat ironing rasps as well, but they are not nearly as useful as these curved ironing rasps. Only the outer portion of the rasp is stitched.

Auriou uses a scale of 1 to 15 grain to describe the cut of their rasps, with 1 the coarsest and 15 the finest.

Auriou ‘s Little rasp Big preformer

The tool arrived yesterday and I don't know how I lived without it all these years ! I put it right to work on a mesquite burl carving that has sent many a keen edge to a premature sharpening, it preformed , in a word outstanding. The construction is Auriou quality throughout . It fits comfortably in your hand as the keen teeth smoothly remove the wood from the piece leaving a smooth finish and remarkably fine shavings due to cutting rather then shredding the wood fibers . The the mark of a n exquisitely cut rasp . The tool is a please to use . . . what more needs to be said. If your work includes carving , sculpture or intricate detail this gem is a must have in your tool box.

I have owned a half dozen Auriou rasps for a number of years and am a HUGE fan of Auriou. A current project had a difficult shaping problem which the loner rasps were not designed for and I thought to try this {7/8") ironing rasp Which I purchased here (good customer service, got it right out to me). Again, Auriou is the best!! A great tool that teaches all other rasps what they are supposed to do but never seem to accomplish. 10 grain provides a great surface ready for sanding. Highly recommended for sculpting wood (furniture or otherwise).
