by Joshua Rose

The Pattern Maker’s Assistant, written in the 19th century, sold out five editions before it was reprinted in 1889 with a sixth edition of the book. It served as a guide for machinists on how to design and construct patterns, offering a description of the various types of patterns and the necessary tools involved. As the author, Joshua Rose, notes, "The complete isolation which usually exists between the pattern shop and the machine shop is an effective bar to the acquisition of knowledge by observation," so his guide provided useful information that might have been otherwise obtained via costly mistakes.

Boasting one of the longest subtitles around - “Embracing Lathe Work, Branch Work, Core Work, Sweep Work, And Practical Gear Construction,” the book provides valuable insight into 19th century pattern shop practices (for those interested in the history and techniques of the craft) - and is still useful for contemporary pattern makers..

The book has an engaging and somewhat bracingly authoritative tone and many detailed sketches. Trade paperback, 249 pages.
