by Sam Maloof

Despite having no formal training as a woodworker, Sam Maloof became one of the most celebrated US furniture-makers. The justly acclaimed Maloof rocking chair was the first piece of contemporary furniture to join the White House’s furniture collection, and it and other pieces by Maloof continue to inspire contemporary furniture-makers.

In this book, which includes an introduction by Jonathan Fairbanks, Maloof offers insight into his hugely influential work and his tools, techniques and process. His furniture is highly functional, with a comfort and clarity of purpose that has been emulated for decades. Finishers may also appreciate Maloof’s special tung-linseed-urethane varnish finish recipe (also copied to this day).

Maloof was said to be a gifted teacher, and his generous approach to sharing his knowledge comes across in this engaging and inspiring book.

"... handles prose with the same clear, natural manner with which he applies a chisel to a walnut board." - The New York Times

"It is hard to imagine a book more representative of Maloof's work than this exquisitely crafted volume." -Los Angeles Times

"An inviting, visual, intellectual and emotional experience." - American Craft

"An impressive book that effectively conveys the textural qualities and sensitivity of this master craftsman’s use of wood" - The New York Times

“Part woodworking manual, part philosophical journal, this book is as unique as author and woodworking legend George Nakashima’s exquisite furniture." --This Old House magazine

"Today’s increasing reverence for nature, truth, simplicity and the independent spirit makes the life, work and philosophy of George Nakashima especially meaningful."--Town & Country
