This mottled, soft Arkansas stone has a medium grit that is great for establishing a wire edge when first honing a blade. One reason some woodworkers prefer the soft Arkansas is that they say the stone has a great feel to it and it seems to help them produce a longer-lasting, more consistent edge. This might be due to the smoother crystalline structure of Arkansas stones, which scratch less than sharper materials and so could result in less edge fracturing and a longer blade life. Usually the stones are used with oil to prevent loading, but you can use water as a lubricant if you prefer. These stones are thinner and considerably lighter in weight than a comparable India stone, which makes them a desirable choice for a traveling toolkit. 8" x 2" x 1/2" in a cedar case.
Note: Unlike hard Arkansas stones, soft Arkansas stones will wear with time. With heavy use you may find it advisable to consider flattening the stone every few years or so.
