Marking gauges are used to scribe with-the-grain lines on a workpiece. The gauge's hardened steel pin will give very thin, fine lines that serve as a precise reference point for your cuts. The gauge also has the ability to repeat settings exactly, so you can have the same reliable measurement on different pieces of project components.

The Marples marking gauge (and its cutting gauge sibling) follows the traditional half-round English design, which makes it easier to hold.

Choice of plantation grown Sonokeeling Rosewood or Beech. The Rosewood is admittedly more upscale, with a solid brass knurled thumbscrew rather than the Beech's plastic one. The brass inserts on the fence to prevent wear. Made in Sheffield, England.

Joseph Marples is one of the best known Sheffield-based hand tool makers, in existence for more than 180 years. The company continues to use the traditional ways of making tools, using the same high-quality materials and hand finishing - and even the same threads are used in the gauges as were used over 100 years ago.

Made in Sheffield, England.
