We typically try to avoid conversations about religion, politics and the-best-way-to-sharpen however this electric sharpener is one topic it’s not difficult to build a consensus around. It’s so easy to use that even those claiming partiality to using a good ol’ pocket knife will undoubtedly be caught with their bread in the butter.

Nearly every professional woodshop we have visited has an electric sharpener. It’s true you can sharpen pencils like Tage Frid on a disk sander, but ALWAYS, it is safer and easier to use a purpose built tool. The sharpener uses a helical cutter just like hand crank varieties, and sharpens standard diameter pencils with ease.

When we opened the box of these sharpeners Tim exclaimed, “I know this sharpener!! My Dad has one, that I used as a kid!” Twenty or so years later, Tim’s father, an architect, is still using the same sharpener. That machine, thanks to enthusiastic young Tim’s efforts, ensured that his father’s office was never without perfectly sharpened pencils (or a sharpener full of shavings).

The X-Acto by Boston sharpener is made in China.
