Cutting Gauges are like marking gauges, except they use a knife instead of a pin. They're used for scoring across the grain and can also be used for cutting strips of wood veneer and small rebates.

The Marples cutting gauge features a half-round head (easier to hold) with inset brass wear plates, and locks with a thumbscrew. The cutter is secured in place with a brass wedge, which also enables removal for sharpening the cutter.

8 1/2" long stem with a head that is 2-3/16” wide x 2-1/2” tall x 1-1/8” thick. Dual bevel hardened steel cutter secured in place with a brass wedge. Choice of plantation grown Sonokeeling Rosewood or Beech. The Rosewood is admittedly more upscale, with a solid brass knurled thumbscrew rather than the Beech's plastic one. Made in Sheffield, England.

Joseph Marples is one of the best known Sheffield-based hand tool makers, in existence for more than 180 years. The company continues to use the traditional ways of making tools, using the same high-quality materials and hand finishing - and even the same threads are used in the gauges as were used over 100 years ago.

Had the big, bright yellow,Chinese looking PLASTIC turnscrew been shown in the catalog photo, I would never have ordered this item. I've been very happy with earlier purchases from this company, but not this one...
I own this product.
Joseph Marples Beech Half-Round Cutting Gauge Review
By: Jim Uber (Feb, 2017)
I think I will like the Beech gauge (just got it yesterday) but I was disappointed in the cutter. It's sharped like a spear point and tears the wood just as much as a pointed marking gauge. But I was able to make my own blade out of an old saw blade in about 20 minutes and shaped it like a real cutter blade and now it works beautifully. I do wonder what the logic is for putting the thumbscrew on the side. It may be great for right-handed users but it is in the way for a left-handed user.
I own this product.

Joseph Marples Beech Half-Round Cutting Gauge Review
By: Bob Reid (May, 2014)
I liked this cutting gauge a lot. The fit and finish was good and everything worked well. While I might quibble over the plastic screw, I recently bought a small piece of Boxwood to do plane repairs. The price was frightful! I guess tradition will have to take a back seat to affordability. Nice gauge at a good value, especially given the head plating, which many gauges don't have.
I own this product.
