To the average person nowadays, the word "pumice" probably connotes something you use in a pedicure more that it connotes woodfinishing. But pumice has a long history of being used to smooth surfaces. In the 18th and 19th centuries, it was common to make an abrasive block using a chunk of fine pumice with one side flattened to rub out a finish. We've tried that, and it works, but the modern method of using pumice powder gives more control and works faster.

Pumice powder is also used in French polishing as part of the application of shellac to create the fine dust that slowly fills the pores of wood. The luster that you can get with the aid of this pumice is truly impressive.

For years we carried Behlen Pumice but were left without a pumice source when Behlen was taken over. So we worked hard to find a source for our own BT&C powdered white pumice stone. This white pumice produces a marginally lighter pore filling color when French polishing.

We realized that we wanted something more elegant and convenient to use than a bag of unidentified white powder, so we decided to package the pumice in a white cannister with a sprinkle shaker top. No need to mess up your space with an open jar of abrasive dust floating everywhere.
