This is a very specialized tool that cuts engrain and nothing else. But it does its job perfectly. The precision-made cutter is attached to the heavy square tool shaft at a pre-set angle. When the shaft sits on the tool rest with the cutting edge at a 45-degree angle, the ring is presented at exactly the right angle for cleanly cutting end grain. The slicing cuts are easy and precise. This is a great tool especially for bowl turners. Each fixed angle ring tool comes supplied with a spare cutter, a spare fixing screw and an Allen key.

Except where noted all tools are made of high speed steel (HSS) and are sold handled. Tony Iles hand finishes each and every turning tool himself and is proud that every tool is shipped with its surfaces ground and edges broken. These are tools that will feel wonderful in the hand, with a heft makes them feel very solid - a real aid in turning. All the tools are shipped sharp and ready to use, although we fully expect many of you to customize the grinds to your particular working methods.

I have been using the 1/2” ring tool for the past couple of years. It was given to me as a birthday present. I primarily use the ring tool for cleaning up the bottom of the deeper bowls I am turning. The ring tool held its edge for 2 years. Unfortunately, the cutting ring now needs replacement. I llive in Ontario Canada and am not aware of any Canadian locations where the cutting ring can be sharpened or replaced. Too bad, it was a great tool and I highly recommend it.
I own this product.
