Cutting Gauges are like marking gauges, except they use a knife instead of a pin. They're used for scoring across the grain and can also be used for cutting strips of wood veneer and small rebates. The cutter is secured in place with a brass wedge, which also enables removal for sharpening the cutter. The Marples cutting gauge features a half-round head (easier to hold) with inset brass wear plates, and locks with a thumbscrew. We offer the Marples cutting gauge in either American black walnut or beech (rosewood is no longer available). 9 1/2" long stem. Made in Sheffield, England by Joseph Marples.

Had the big, bright yellow,Chinese looking PLASTIC turnscrew been shown in the catalog photo, I would never have ordered this item. I've been very happy with earlier purchases from this company, but not this one...
I own this product.
Joseph Marples Beech Half-Round Cutting Gauge Review
By: Jim Uber (Feb, 2017)
I think I will like the Beech gauge (just got it yesterday) but I was disappointed in the cutter. It's sharped like a spear point and tears the wood just as much as a pointed marking gauge. But I was able to make my own blade out of an old saw blade in about 20 minutes and shaped it like a real cutter blade and now it works beautifully. I do wonder what the logic is for putting the thumbscrew on the side. It may be great for right-handed users but it is in the way for a left-handed user.
I own this product.

Joseph Marples Beech Half-Round Cutting Gauge Review
By: Bob Reid (May, 2014)
I liked this cutting gauge a lot. The fit and finish was good and everything worked well. While I might quibble over the plastic screw, I recently bought a small piece of Boxwood to do plane repairs. The price was frightful! I guess tradition will have to take a back seat to affordability. Nice gauge at a good value, especially given the head plating, which many gauges don't have.
I own this product.
