As we've mentioned before, the Festool system is cleverly integrated, and the vacuum is an integral part of the Festool experience. All the tools that need vacuums have connections built into the tool so that you can work cleanly and easily. When you reduce the dust and waste at the source (rather than some drudgery you do at the end of the day), you end up with less dust in the air and a generally cleaner, safer, more efficient and more enjoyable shop experience.
Here's how it works: The tool plugs into the vacuum so that you only have one cord and one hose going from the tool. On air tools, you use a special hose (to replace what would be two hoses), and the tool exhaust is ducted back to the vacuum so that it won't interfere with the work. When you turn the tool on, the vacuum automatically kicks in. All the vacuums have wheels and can function as a rolling base for Systainers. There are five basic models of vacuum: the Mini, the Midi,CT26,CT36 and the CT48. The latter three differ only in the size of the bag - the CT48's having the biggest bag. The Midi is smaller for maximum portability, so it's great for on-site work. The Mini is slightly smaller than the Midi so for absolute portability get the Mini but remember that the Midi is more versatile. All Festool vacuums now come with HEPA filters. We recommend the CT26 or larger vacs for workshops for their extra power and larger bag capacity. The CT26 is by far the most popular model, but the CT48's larger bag capacity means fewer changes, great for a continuous usage environment. The basic vacuums include an 11.5' anti-static hose and a single bag and filter. The CT26, CT36, and CT48 all work with the FESTOOL air sanders, but we'd recommend the CT48 for its convenience. The vacuums are designed with the precision of the entire FESTOOL system, and are about as quiet as any vacuums you will ever use. The system features anti-static hoses, which means you won't get the electric shocks that have been a kind of behavior modification program for a generation of woodworkers.
In most cases you can buy the vacuum along with a tool for great combined savings.
The CT 26, 36, and 48 are identical except for bag size. All have a built in hose garage for storing the hose that comes with the machine. The machines all use a new "self-cleaning" filter bag which eliminates dust caking up inside the bag so that the vacuum can maintain suction even when the bag is nearly full. The way it works is that first the bag is filled with air to inflate it to fit the internal profile of the CT. Then the bag deflates, causing any fine dust particles that are caked up inside the bag to break up. Finally the bag abruptly fills again and shakes off the dust cake that was broken up previously, freeing the clogs in the filter, and letter the vacuum maintain suction.
You can bolt and stack systainers on top of all model vacuums for easy transport and organization. A huge array of accessories are available for the vacuums, so that you can use it in every type of shop situation from a general show floor vacuum to a dedicated vacuum with an overhead attachment to eliminate tangling the hose.
