Waterstones
We stock several types and brands of waterstones. When you select a brand or
type of stone consider the entire system, not just the cost of the stone but
the size, how many stones are needed in the system, and ease of maintenance.
Norton waterstones are our most popular stones and are available in
a host of sizes and combination for every situation. They represent a great
system with a nice balance of speed, ease of maintenance, versatility with tough
alloys, and final edge quality. Ice Bear stones represent a traditional
Japanese waterstone technology. These stones are the softest and easiest to
flatten, but they work more slowly than the Norton stones and require more frequent
flattening. The 10K Ice bear stone is a wonderful polishing stone and
a real favorite. Another approach are the Super-Stones which are moderately hard resin
based stones which flatten easily but don't need soaking before use.
The only true natural waterstones we stock are our Arkansas stones and
Lily White Washita stones which are nominally oilstones, but they are not porous, and many of our customers,
mostly knife and razor sharpeners, use these stones with water.
